this is not an ARTIST bio

(but you will still learn all the usual bits - my background, art journey, thoughts on inspiration…)

I prefer to share my story in a less formal, more personal, way.

So….. Let’s get to know each other. I’ll go first.

WHO I am

I made the unconventional leap from Scientist to Artist about 14 years ago. Leaving the research labs in the University of Michigan, I hung up my labcoat to put on...…

.....well, I didn’t know what.

I spent the next 4 years searching for "The Perfect Media". For me, it didn’t exist - I was always pulled onward, eager to see what the next one could do. My scientific curiosity was now being channeled into experimenting with techniques.

At this point I had received enough positive feedback that I was able to place my creations in a wonderfully eclectic space, The Upstairs Gallery, which carries my work to this day.

I continued to create simply for the joy it brought me - carefully refining my processes through experimentation, as I’d been trained to do. I was following all the rules; people were enjoying my pieces… so why was I still seeking something more?

Several media and 10 years later, I would finally allow the answer to find me - inspiration. wait... WHAT?!

How could you possibly create during all those years without inspiration?!?

Ahhh, I can see your confusion (after all, I was LIVING it for all those years!!)

Inspiration comes in many forms and from various sources. I was creating with….

let’s just call it… Intellectual Inspiration.

My process went something like this: I’d have an idea, maybe make a sketch, probably write out a detailed plan (ehh-hem; protocol 😉) of how it would happen, then I’d sweat, struggle and force that piece into existence.

Exactly the image you have of the Creative Process, right? ... No, of course not!

Artists throughout time have been depicted as carefree, effortless creators.

Vessels through which Divine Inspiration flows as they toil obliviously for hours.

Well, I had the toiling for hours part down, but all the rest was sorely lacking....

Happily, I have experienced an evolution in my artistic self. I have found that something more I was seeking. Another SOURCE for my Inspiration.

Which brings us to this…

HOW I work

Thanks to that recent shift in source of inspiration, my artistic process is now very simple to describe.

I Allow. I Listen.

I do JUST that one step given to me.

I Repeat.

That’s it. I’ve dismissed the drive to preplan every piece in exact detail. No need to map out construction steps from inside out. No pressure for perfection at every turn.

I do as I am guided by listening to this new Source of Inspiration.

One that has expanded the potential of my work to infinite possibility. One that has removed the angst and the effort from the hours. One that I never knew existed and can still barely believe is available to me. Let’s call it… Intuitive Inspiration.

Whatever you care to call it, I hope you find the end results as magical as I do.

the story of SPLAT

This is my friend, Splat.

(If you’re still at the table, enjoying my story, I feel you deserve a little lite-hearted dessert after the main course.)

Splat is a creature of contrasts.

Residing on a foundation of meticulously drawn lines, Splat is formed exclusively of curves and arcs.

Literally bubbling with colors against the stark backdrop of black and white, Splat reminds us that the variation between the extremes will always be the most interesting place to focus.

Splat finds a way into or onto every piece made through the intuitive process described above, because while it may seem a random splat, it is after all, full of intention.
